The event entitled 'Love Hornbills Day 2020' was held by the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Hornbill Research Foundation, and the Hornbill International on February 13, 2020, at the Hornbill Garden, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University. The aims were to promote the public awareness of the hornbill conservation, as well as, to raise funds for research and conservation of hornbills in Thailand.
Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D., Acting President of Mahidol University presided over this event. On this occasion, Assoc. Prof. Palangpon Kongsaeree, Dean of Faculty of Science, Mahidol University welcomed and delivered a report, followed by an update on the project performance of the Hornbill Research Foundation by Dr. Woraphat Arthayukti, President of Hornbill Research Foundation.
The event featured a hornbill conservation exhibition, booths offering products, food and drinks from foundations and organizations, art workshops, the launch of the "Hornbill Lover" T-shirt design contest, a fashion show and a mini-concert by '25 Hours' and 'Todd Thongdee'. Furthermore, the Limited Edition T-shirts, featuring a pattern of Helmeted Hornbills could be purchased at this event.
One of the highlights was a seminar on "Helmeted Hornbill", a critically-endangered species, by Dr.Rangsarit Kanjanavanich, M.D., Lecturer from Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University; President of Lanna Bird and Nature Conservation Club, Ms.Methinee Passara-udomsak, Researcher of TRAFFIC, Mr.Watcharaboon Leesuwan, Secretary and Public Relations of Seub Nakhasathien Foundation, and Dr.Vijak Chimchom, Secretary of Hornbill Research Foundation.
H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously named the "Hornbill Research Foundation". The Thailand Hornbill Project was initiated in 1978 by Professor Emeritus Dr. Pilai Poonswad, Lecturer of Faculty of Science, Mahidol University. The study was initiated in Khao Yai National Park and later extended to include a number of forested areas in the western and southern regions of Thailand. Apart from the biology and ecology of hornbills, research was also made into the range and status of hornbills throughout the country. This has expanded to become a foundation in 1993. Currently, the Hornbill Research Foundation has collaborated with several academic institutes, government, and non-government sectors, at both national and international levels.
