Dr.
Jirundon Yuvaniyama has completed
a B.Sc. (first-class honored) in chemistry
from Faculty of Science, Mahidol University
and a Ph.D. in biological chemistry
from the University of Michigan (Ann
Arbor), USA.
Since his doctoral training, Dr.
Yuvaniyama has always been fascinated
by the beauty of three-dimensional
protein structures. Using the techniques
of X-ray crystallography, he has determined
the structures of human dual-specificity
phosphatase VHR (Science 272: 1328),
as well as dihydrofolate reductase-thymidylate
synthase (Pf-DHFR-TS: Nat Struct Biol.
10:357) and plasmepsin II from the
malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum.
He is also interested in applications
and utilization of protein 3D structures
such as alteration of substrate specificity
of a bacterial enzyme by protein engineering.
In addition, he has joined four other
faculty members to form the Center
for Excellence in Protein Structure
and Function, headed by Prof.
MR Jisnuson Svasti. This Center
is supported by Faculty of Science,
Mahidol University to promote research
activities on protein structure-function
relationship to advance our understandings
in the international standard and
for the benefits of our country. |
