PACCON 2019 Press Conference
Under the theme "Together for the Benefit of Mankind"
which highlights the impact of chemistry research and its applications on society and humanity

On January 17, 2019, at 1 PM at Stang Mongkolsuk Conference Room, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, Phayathai campus, Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D., Acting President of Mahidol University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sittiwat Lertsiri, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pranee Phinyocheep, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, together with Prof. Dr. Supa Hannongbua, President of the Chemical Society of Thailand under the patronage of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, made an announcement to host the Pure and Applied Chemistry International Conference (PACCON 2019). Under the theme “Together for the Benefit of Mankind,” PACCON 2019 accentuates the impact of chemistry research and inventions on the quality of human life and on society in various aspects. PACCON is a unique scientific venue to promote a collaborative network among scientists from all over the world to contribute knowledge and research advancements. The conference provides a great opportunity for Thai scientists and students to showcase their research and to gain international exposure. PACCON 2019 will be held on February 7 – 8, 2019, at Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC), Bang Na District, Bangkok, Thailand.

Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D., Acting President of Mahidol University, stated “Since its establishment in 1958, the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, has gained a prestigious and highly regarded reputation. It is a great occasion to co-host prestigious international conference PACCON 2019 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Department. PACCON offers an excellent stage for chemists from Thailand and from different parts of the world to meet and exchange knowledge, to showcase their research, and to establish research collaboration. Sustaining effective research collaboration is key to drive the translation of research findings to inventions and technologies that benefit society, which is coincided with the goals of the national research and innovation strategy.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sittiwat Lertsiri, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, added “This is a great opportunity for students and scientists in Thailand to attend the plenary lecture delivered by Professor Dr. Bernard L. Feringa, the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2016, on a synthetic molecule that could be designed to operate like a machine or a motor. The concept of molecular machine was further developed to nanocar that could be used as a cargo to deliver drugs to targeted cells in our body. The discovery is providing hope of an effective therapeutic in the future. In addition, there are a number of examples that successfully translated basic research findings to the innovations in chemistry that benefit society. These include Siam Gasohol kit for quality assurance at gas stations, chemical test kits for consumer product safety and environmental monitoring, products based on natural herbs that could reduce joint inflammations and muscular pain, and also many other interesting products and innovations based on research knowledge in chemistry.

Furthermore, PACCON 2019 features plenary and invited lectures that will be delivered by 69 world-renowned and eminent chemists in 14 scientific sessions covering a wide range of aspects in chemical sciences. In addition, the oral and poster sessions at the event will provide participants with an international stage to present and discuss their research. In celebration of the 60th anniversary of its founding, PACCON 2019 also presents collections of spectacular scientific images, an exhibition to feature the past and present achievements, as well as the future outlook of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University. The exhibition highlights the contribution of current and past scholars of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, in providing knowledge and driving chemical knowledge-based innovations to the Thai society.

Highlights of PACCON 2019

1. Plenary Lecture delivered by Professor Dr. Bernard L. Feringa from University of Groningen, the Netherlands, the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2016, entitled “The Art of Building Small - from molecular switches to motors”. The lecture will discuss the development of chemical compound that could function as a motor. The discovery leads to the development of nanocar, which has prominent potential as future effective therapeutic due to its ability to deliver drugs to the targeted cells.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pranee Phinyocheep, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University and Chair of PACCON 2019 conference, provides an update on the current status of the preparation for PACCON 2019 preparation. At present, more than 1,200 participants from 24 countries already registered to attend the conference. PACCON 2019 will feature invited lectures from 69 world-renown scientists in 14 sessions covered wide range of areas in chemical science. The participants, which include scientists, researchers, students, government and private sectors, submitted their work to present at PACCON 2019. Total of 183 abstracts were selected for oral presentations and 599 abstracts for poster presentations. In addition to the rich scientific program offered at PACCON 2019,  Dow-CST Small Scale Chemistry Workshop and BBL-CST Small Scale Chemistry for Secondary School Teachers in ASEAN Training the Trainers is highlighted as the special event at the conference.
